Oakland is the academic and health care center of Pittsburgh. It is home to the campus of the University of Pittsburgh and the University of PIttsburgh Medical Center. Many local landmarks can be found here including the Cathedral of Learning, Soldiers and Sailors National Military Museum and Monument.
The Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, Phipps Conservatory, Schenley Park are also located in Oakland. Oakland was named for the abundance of oak trees growing in the area and it is an urbanized neighborhood and a main international hub for medical research. Oakland is home to the Falk Institute, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.The homes of some of Pittsburgh’s early professional sports teams including Forbes Field and Pitt Stadium were located in Oakland.
