Gabrielle Stravelli, who was impressive even before she was annointed as a protegee of the living legend Marilyn Maye, offers further proof that we are living in a golden age of contemporary jazz singers. As deep as she is swinging, Ms. Stravelli delivers all her songs with a lovely voice and an unfailingly warm and engaging personality. She’s always been a master of highly original interpretations and arrangements, like her mash-up of Chick Corea’s “You’re Everything” and Stevie Wonder’s “You and I,” while the likes of her refreshingly straightforward, unironic “Mambo Italiano” showcase not only her Italian-American musical heritage but her irresistible sense of humor. (Both of these number are readily viewable on youtube.) Last year’s album, Stairway to the Stars, is a matchless set of fresh treatments of standards, delivered as duets with the redoubtable pianist Michael Kanan, while her new latest, Dream Ago, is the first extended showcase of her skills at writing original songs.
