Cynthia Sayer is a hot combination all by herself: a virtuoso banjo soloist, crowd-pleasing vocalist, and bandleader, now in a new trio with two other first-call string players, violinist Sara Caswell and bassist Mike Weatherly. She hardly seems old enough to be labeled a “veteran” yet she’s already played with everyone around the New York scene, most notably a long stint with Woody Allen’s Jazz Band; whatever the current public opinion regarding the Woodmeister might be, there’s no debate that he has always led formidably-awesome New Orleans-style hot jazz ensembles. Whatever else she might be, Ms. Sayer is one of the most entertaining jazz musicians on the scene today, equipped with a repertoire of offbeat material and an arsenal of delightful shticks and routines that always leave audiences wanting more.
