Housed in a former limestone quarry, the 100-acre Mega Cavern in Louisville is home to the world’s first underground zip-line course, offering adventure-seekers a spectacular and truly unique experience. Although it’s not a natural cave system, the Mega Cavern is nothing short of breathtaking, with towering columns of sheer rock to support the massive underground space, whichlies beneath 10 lanes of the Waterson Expressway (I-264) and parts of the Louisville Zoo!

Entering the Mega Cavern is a breeze and some tours are handicap accessible. Once inside, the average temperature is 58-60 degrees year-round, so be sure to dress appropriately - especially if you get cold easily! Close- toed shoes are required for most tours and it’s a good idea to have pockets that zip if you want to bring a cell phone or camera along to document the journey. Full-service restrooms are available in the gift shop check-in area, and lockers are also available to rent.

There are a variety of activities to choose from at the Mega Cavern, including an underground BMX & MTB bike park, a seated historical tram tour, and ropes challenge course, but the Mega Zips experience is among the most popular, as thousands of fabulous Tripadvisor reviews will attest! The whole experience takes about 2 1⁄2 hours to complete, depending on the number of participants, and the tour ranges upward from the cavern floor to 10 stories high.

Before practicing on a beginner-level zip, experienced guides will help suit you up with a harness, safety lamp and helmet. They will also cover a variety of basic safety measures, putting everyone at ease with lighthearted banter and an obvious passion for the job at hand. After the practice run, it’s on to the main attraction!

Guaranteed to get your heart racing and adrenaline pumping, the zip-line tour features six totally unique underground zip lines and two suspension bridges, offering plenty of opportunities to test your balance, skill and courage! The interplay of light and shadow on the colossal cavern walls is mesmerizing to behold as you fly from one platform to the next; an easy feat thanks to the expert help of the tour guides, who handle
the braking, inspect and connect the gear and take every precaution to ensure the safety of all visitors.

The longest line stretches an incredible 900 feet over the deep underground chasms and bridges, propelling you to speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. Other highlights of the tour included jumping off a 70-foot high platform and a dual/parallel racing zip finale that allows you to race another person to the finish line.

Situated just five miles from the Louisville Airport and 15 minutes from downtown, the Mega Cavern is the perfect activity for travelers who want to see more of Louisville that typically meets the eye! Open year round with tours available rain or shine, it’s a good idea to reserve a spot in advance, since tours tend to fill up quickly. Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity for adventure!
