Veterans Day Parade / Nov. 11
Louisville began holding a parade each year on Veterans Day for the first time in 60 years on Nov. 11, 2011 as a commemoration of the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year in the new millennium – a point in time that would not occur again for 100 years. Today, the parade and subsequent Massing of the Colors Ceremony has grown to include up to 80 units, as well as a variety of special displays and related events designed to honor American veterans from all wars, including active duty members of all branches of the Armed Services and their families. Light Up Louisville / Nov. 25
A local holiday tradition for more than three decades, Light Up Louisville is now entering its 36th year and will be held the day after Thanksgiving when Santa Claus arrives to help Mayor Fischer illuminate downtown. This year, the special day will include the Run, Run Rudolph 5k run walk; the lots of lights holiday parade starting at 7 p.m. from Jefferson through Fourth Street Live!; Santa’s arrival after the parade; and the moment when Santa joins the Mayor to light up the city from the stage located across from the ice skating rink and Christmas tree. Churchill Downs Fall Meet / Thru Nov. 27
The world-famous home of the Kentucky Derby is open for its 127th annual Fall Meet this month and it’s always fun to visit the track during the cooler temps and changing colors of late autumn. The 21-day event includes a new “Stars of Tomorrow” program, as well as the new Spendthrift Stallion Stakes. This year, the anchor of the lucrative 2016 stakes program comes on Black Friday Nov. 25 with the 142nd running of the $500,000 Clark Handicap, which often lures some of the nation’s top older horses. MEGA Cavern Lights Under Louisville / Nov. 18- Dec. 31
Every year the Louisville MEGA Cavern is transformed into an underground wonderland of lights during the holiday season, including more than 2,000,000 points of light and more than 850 separate Christmas-themed light displays. But perhaps what’s most amazing about this unique display is that visitors can drive their cars right through the cavern! The MEGA Cavern totals more than 17 miles of underground passages, the Lights Under Louisville display takes about 30 minutes to drive through. For more information, call 877-614-6342.
