Having hosted some of the biggest names in the industry, Louisville’s very own nautical themed music festival, Forecastle, has become a summer staple for Louisvillians and fans around the world. Taking place over three weekend days in mid-July, Forecastle brings bands of every genre together in an impressive lineup with the perfect backdrop: the beautiful banks of the Ohio River and Louisville's Waterfront Park.
The festival boasts four stages on the 100-acre Waterfront Park in an impressive daily lineup that continues all weekend long, with up-and-coming artists playing alongside world-renowned headliners. Previous Forecastle Festivals have welcomed the likes of the Avett Brothers, The Black Crowes, Robert Plant, The Black Keys and Louisville’s own My Morning Jacket.
The 2016 festival was especially well received. As always, the first day was full of memorable performances. After a long evacuation for the weather, Moon taxi revived the momentum and Ben Harper sang sweet songs as the sun set on the Louisville skyline. After 1200's legendary performance, and the Avett Brothers enlightening send-off, Forecastle Festival day one was in the books.
Day two of Forecastle was a hot one in 2016, but the heat didn’t deter anyone from enjoying the various sets on the schedule and the festivities. Kentucky For Kentucky continued their always fun pony races on the lawn, while local and regional bourbon distillers kept the bourbon flowing into the hands of thirsty festivalgoers.
Performances by Shakey Graves, The Arcs, and Alabama Shakes kept hands high and hips moving on the main stage, while Sylvan Esso and Dr. Dog held down the side stages. If you miss some of the daytime shows on the schedule not to worry; different local venues around town hold late-night concerts starting at midnight or later.
Day three was the most-anticipated day of the festival last year, with performances by Ryan Adams, Death Cab for Cutie, Brandi Carlile, and Gary Clark Jr. Not surprisingly, day three also had the highest attendance of Forecastle weekend, with more than 20,000 people attending.
Louisville's Forecastle Festival always delivers one of the best summer experiences you can have, as people of every age, race and creed come together to enjoy performances by some of the world’s greatest artists in an exciting and eco-friendly environment.
