The Kentucky Derby is often referred to as the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” or the “Run for the Roses,” signifying the famous blanket of roses that is always draped over the winning horse. The Derby is also the first leg of the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, with the Preakness and then the Belmont Stakes to follow.

Always held the first Saturday in May - the day after the Kentucky Oaks horse race - the Kentucky Derby is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting sporting events held anywhere in the world. This year, the Derby will be held on Sarturday, May 5th. Racing fans, curious spectators, people out to have a great time and celebrities from all over the world convene upon Louisville every year for days before, anticipating the big event.

Countdown to Kentucky Derby 2018 - Save the Date!

While the Kentucky Derby has always been and will continue to be the focus of all Kentucky Derby Festival activities in the area, the city also offers a long list of other exciting activities taking place for two weeks leading up the Derby itself. With that in mind, Kentucky Derby season in Louisville actually begins every year with Thunder Over Louisville two weeks before the big race.

As one of the nation’s largest and most spectacular fireworks displays, Thunder (as it is known locally) draws huge crowds along the banks of the Ohio River and spectators are able to enjoy the festivities for free on both the Kentucky and southern Indiana side.
